Who doesn’t love a good ol’ BLT? That’s a Bacon, Lettuce, and Tomato Sandwich for my European Friends. My grandfather used to make his with a little twist which I love to this day. Rather than use lettuce he substituted fresh basil leaves instead. Far more flavor than the lettuce.
So here is my recipe for my Grandfathers BLT including the fresh bread. If you don’t want to make your own fresh bread, then just skip to the bottom for the BLT.
Fresh Roll Recipe Ingredients:
1kg strong white bread flour
1 level tablespoon fine sea salt
2 x 7g sachets of dried yeast
1 tablespoon sugar
4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
650ml lukewarm water
So take your flour and salt and combine in a mixing bowl. In a separate bowl add the rest of your ingredients. Let stand for about 10-15 minutes until the yeast has activated. Then turn your mixer on and add the water slowly with the rest of the ingredients. When the dough has become fully mixed and elastic remove from the bowl and place on a flour sprinkled surface.
At this point I divide the dough into four balls and place into separate bowls, covered with damp cloths. Now you just have to wait until the dough doubles in size in each bowl. This could take anywhere from a half hour to an hour. Once the dough balls have doubled in size place them back on the floured surface and knead until all the air is out.
Cut each ball into 4 to 8 smaller pieces depending on how big you want your rolls and line on a baking sheet. Cook at 180 degrees celsius for about 30-40 minutes. When they come out of the oven brush with butter and sprinkle with dried basil.
If your impatient like me you go straight in and cut one in half and start preparing your BLT sandwich. Nothing better than fresh bread for the soul, and of course a sandwich.
The BLT is pretty simple and most of you probably don’t need instructions, but for the few that do, here you go.
- 2 slices of English Bacon
- 4 Large Basil Leaves
- Tomato slices, enough to cover the bottom roll
So spread some mayo on each slice of bread (4 slices since I had two sandwiches). Place your cooked bacon on the roll then your tomato, then your basil, or any order you prefer. Put the top on and eat.
