Greta Macabre’s Candy Apples: Cooking With A Pin Up Recipe #6

Well Halloween was Wednesday night, but quite a few people will be celebrating it this weekend over here in Prague, including a cool Psychobilly Halloween Party at Hard Rock Cafe Prague, details here for all you locals.

So what better way to begin the celebrations than with some home-made candy apples, courtesy of Croatian Pin Up Girl and Model Greta Macabre. Greta has sent this recipe as part of our new series “Cooking With A Pin Up,” as well as another wonderful recipe that we will be featuring later on.

We have been corresponding with Greta for a couple of months now to tie down the recipes and also do a small interview, in which Greta was very magnanimous with her time in doing for us. Her interview is a wonderful little window into this gorgeous Pin Up models world, including some great band recommendations. And what perfect timing as one of her favorite people is none other than Vincent Price, another Halloween favorite for some of us. This beauty is not all looks as this girl is a University student studying History. Greta Macabre’s Candy Apples


10 medium apples (Cortland, McIntosh, etc.), stems removed

10 popsicle sticks (We could not find popsicle sticks over here so we used three skewers per apple tied with gold ribbon.)

1/2 cup water

2 1/2 cups sugar

1/2 cup corn syrup (You can make this without corn syrup, just substitute an additional 1/4 cup of water with 1 cup of sugar)

1 tablespoon white vinegar

1 teaspoon red food colouring


Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Rinse the apples well and pat dry. Insert a stick into the bottom of each apple. Set aside.

Candy glaze Place all the ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Simmer, without stirring, until a candy thermometer reads 143°C (290°F). Remove from the heat. Dip the apples in the syrup one at a time, coating thoroughly. Place on the cookie sheet. Let the glaze harden.

After dipping the apples in the syrup, you can roll them in crushed pistachios or peanuts.

Note Use any leftover glaze to make lollipops: Butter a marble slab or cover an inverted baking sheet with aluminum foil and oil lightly.

Pour about 15 ml (1 tablespoon) syrup onto the slab or baking sheet.

Lay 1 end of a wooden lollipop stick or coffee stirrer in the middle of the syrup and cover with another 15 ml (1 tablespoon) syrup.

Repeat with the remaining syrup.

If the syrup starts to harden in the saucepan, heat gently to liquefy.
